CHARACTERISTIC of Atypical lymphocyte - ameboid shape

Size

15 - 30 um in diameter

Cytoplasm

The copious cytoplasm is pale blue, except at its borders, particularly where the outer margin is in contact with neighbouring red cells, the cytoplasm is dark blue.

Nucleus

Can be round, oval, reniform, lobulated or occasionally, clover-leaf shaped

Chromatin

Exceptionally smooth in its dispersion

Infectious mononucleosis is characterized by atypical mononuclear cells or atypical lymphocytes which are mainly activated T lymphocytes produced as part of the immunological reaction to EBV-infected B lymphocytes.
